The History of Moncler: From the Mountains to Luxury
From a small workshop at the foot of the French Alps to a global luxury house, Moncler has come through more than seventy years of history without ever losing its identity: the down jacket. A look back at the journey of a brand born for the high mountains that has become an essential reference in contemporary fashion.
The origins: Monestier-de-Clermont, 1952
Moncler was born in 1952 in Monestier-de-Clermont, a mountain village near Grenoble in the French Alps. The brand's name is in fact a contraction of the village's name. Originally, the company founded by René Ramillon and André Vincent made mountain equipment: tents, sleeping bags and quilted clothing designed to protect workers from the cold. At first, the down jacket was nothing more than an undergarment worn by employees beneath their work overalls.
The down jacket, from the worksite to mountaineering
The mountaineer Lionel Terray quickly spotted the potential of these down garments and worked with the brand to improve them. The ‘Moncler pour Lionel Terray’ line was born, designed for high-altitude expeditions. It was this sporting endorsement that laid the foundations of the brand: in 1954, Moncler down jackets accompanied the Italian expedition to K2, then the French expedition to Makalu in 1955. The major turning point came in 1968, when Moncler became the official supplier to the French ski team at the Grenoble Olympic Games.
From the slopes to the streets: the 1980s
In the 1980s, the Moncler down jacket left the slopes to conquer the cities. In Italy, the ‘paninari’ movement — fashionable young Milanese — adopted the shiny down jacket en masse as a social and stylistic marker. Moncler then became a fashion object in its own right, far beyond its technical function. This dual identity — performance and style — would never leave the brand again.
The Remo Ruffini revival
At the end of the 1990s, the brand ran into difficulties. Everything changed in 2003, when the Italian entrepreneur Remo Ruffini took over the reins of Moncler. His vision: to transform the functional down jacket into a desirable luxury piece, without disowning its mountain heritage. Under his leadership, Moncler moved upmarket, refined its materials and its image, and gradually established itself on the international luxury scene. The brand was listed on the Milan stock exchange in 2013.
Moncler Genius: constant reinvention
In 2018, Ruffini launched the Moncler Genius project, which invites several designers to reinterpret the down jacket, each in their own way, with collections renewed regularly. Names such as Pierpaolo Piccioli, Simone Rocha and Craig Green, as well as collaborations with streetwear brands, bring constant creative energy to the house. From then on, Moncler positioned itself at the crossroads of luxury, fashion and popular culture.
Recognising a Moncler: the logo and the codes

Moncler's emblematic logo depicts a rooster against a backdrop of mountains, a legacy of its French Alpine roots. Authentic pieces stand out for the quality of the down, the careful finishing, the holographic authentication label and the regularity of the quilted stitching. As with any heavily counterfeited luxury brand, buying from a reliable seller and systematic authentication are essential.
Why Moncler remains a safe bet
Moncler combines technical heritage, craftsmanship and strong desirability, making it a brand that depreciates little. A well-cared-for Moncler down jacket keeps excellent value over time, which also makes it a smart choice on the pre-owned market. Buying a pre-owned piece gives you access to sought-after models while making real savings, and is a more responsible choice.
