The History of Parajumpers: From US Air Force Rescuers to Italian Luxury
Behind Parajumpers down jackets, with their fur-trimmed hoods and famous metal hook, lies one of the finest stories in technical clothing. The story of an Italian designer, a chance encounter in an Alaskan bar, and an elite unit of the US military. How could an Italian luxury brand be born from the world of military rescuers? Here is the complete history of Parajumpers, from its origins to its status as an icon of high-end outerwear.
The origins: an encounter in an Anchorage bar
It all began in the mid-2000s, in Alaska. Massimo Rossetti, an Italian designer specialising in outerwear, was travelling across the United States when he had an encounter that would change everything. In a bar in Anchorage, he met a member of the 210th Rescue Squadron, a rescue unit of the US military. Fascinated by the stories of these men and their equipment, Rossetti found the inspiration of a lifetime: to create clothing as functional as the rescuers' gear, but designed for the city.
Who are the 'Parajumpers'?

The brand's name comes directly from these rescuers. Members of the 210th Rescue Squadron are nicknamed the 'PJs', short for Pararescue Jumpers — in other words, rescuers who parachute in. Based in Alaska, they are specialists trained for the most extreme rescue operations: climbers stranded high in the mountains, ships adrift, missions in the most hostile parts of the globe. Their motto, adopted by the brand as a legacy, is as noble as their mission: 'That Others May Live'. It is this spirit of courage and reliability that Rossetti wanted to build into every piece.
2006: the birth of an Italian brand
Back in Italy, Massimo Rossetti brought his project to life. In 2006, in partnership with the Italian company Ape & Partners S.p.A., he launched the first Parajumpers collections, made up of just a handful of models at the time. Rossetti was no beginner: he had years of experience in outerwear behind him, having worked for major houses. This dual culture — Italian savoir-faire on one side, American military inspiration on the other — would become the brand's signature: clothes cut for extreme cold, but with a finish and style worthy of luxury.
Rescue DNA in every detail
What makes Parajumpers instantly recognisable are the functional details inherited directly from the world of rescue:

- The removable metal hook: found on most jackets, it is inspired by the quick-release carabiner used by parachutists.
- The yellow strap: this small yellow tape on the zips and hooks acts as a signal, making it possible to locate your garment in difficult situations.

- The shoulder patch: it bears the initials PJS and the motto of the 210th Rescue Squadron, a permanent tribute to the unit that inspired the brand — we decode it in our guide to the Parajumpers logo and patch.
- The large cargo pockets: designed for functionality, they are inspired in particular by firefighters' equipment, another source of inspiration for Rossetti.
Every element has a reason to exist: at Parajumpers, form always follows function.
The iconic models: Gobi, Kodiak and the rest
True to its inspiration, Parajumpers named its first jackets after famous missions or places linked to rescue operations.

The Gobi, a bomber jacket with a fur-trimmed hood, is undoubtedly the most emblematic model: compact and urban, it has become a cult piece.

The Kodiak, longer and more protective, embodies the extreme-cold down jacket par excellence. Alongside them, models such as the Denali and the Long Bear completed the range. All share the same DNA: a tough nylon shell, a removable down lining and the famous fur hood. Find them in our guides to the Gobi and Kodiak bombers and the Long Bear parkas.
From technical clothing to urban luxury

Over the years, Parajumpers has gone far beyond the status of a mere technical outerwear brand. Thanks to the quality of its materials, its high-end down and its refined design, the brand has established itself in major cities around the world, particularly in Northern Europe and North America, where harsh winters demand truly high-performance clothing. The range has also grown: the emblematic down jackets have been joined by lightweight and hybrid jackets, knitwear and collections for every season. Today, Parajumpers occupies a singular place, at the crossroads of technical clothing and Italian luxury.
Why Parajumpers still appeals so strongly
The brand's lasting success comes down to a rare balance: an authentic and inspiring story, genuine functionality inherited from rescue work, and an aesthetic that works as well in the city as in the mountains. Unlike purely logo-driven brands, Parajumpers attracts those looking for genuine technical performance combined with a discreet, confident style — we detail these reasons in why Parajumpers is so sought after. It is also what makes it a safe bet on the pre-owned market: a Parajumpers piece, built to last, retains its quality and its good looks year after year.
