Recognising Genuine BAPE: An Authentication Guide
A legend of Japanese streetwear, A Bathing Ape has been copied since its earliest days — the BAPE Camo and the Shark Hoodie are among the most counterfeited designs in street culture. Here is how to recognise a genuine piece.
At NB08, every piece is checked and authenticated in our boutique before it goes on sale. Here are the decisive markers.
Why check the authenticity of a BAPE piece?
Thirty years of hype and cult designs: the copies are countless, from the crude to the highly accomplished. The details of the camo and the Japanese labelling make the difference.
The BAPE Camo and the ape head

The authentic camo works the Ape Head into the pattern, with crisp outlines and deep colours; the pattern is carefully matched at the seams. The ape head (embroidered or printed) is perfectly drawn — copies almost always distort the face or miss the nuances of the camo.
Japanese labels and markings
A crisp 'A BATHING APE®' neck label bearing the BAPE name and the Japanese size, detailed inside labels (made in Japan for many pieces, precise composition), and an authenticity label depending on the era. Uneven typography or a missing ®: a strong signal.
Materials and finishing
Heavy cottons, dense fleece, quality zips (smooth-running full zips on the hoodies), even stitching. The standard of Japanese manufacturing can be felt — copies are thinner and shinier.
Price and seller: the warning signs
A recent BAPE piece sold off cheap is suspect; vintage pieces call for expert assessment. Ask for macro shots of the labels and patterns.
