Recognising Genuine Vintage Celine Bags: An Authentication Guide

The value of vintage Celine bags — Macadam canvas above all — has soared with the renewed taste for period monograms. And with it, so have counterfeits and dubious attributions. Here is how to check a vintage Celine bag before you buy it.

At NB08, every bag is checked and authenticated in our boutique before it goes on sale. The method is set out below.

Why check the authenticity of a vintage Celine bag?

Pieces from the '70s to the '90s have neither a chip nor a hologram: authentication rests entirely on the quality of manufacture, the markings and the historical consistency of the model — exactly what modern copies fail to reproduce.

Macadam canvas and patterns

Coated Macadam canvas has a pattern of linked 'C's that is regular, crisp and aligned at the seams. The coating ages with a soft patina — no crude, plasticky cracking. A blurred pattern, misshapen Cs or random pattern matching: a copy, or a worn-out canvas to avoid.

Markings and numbers

The 'CELINE PARIS' markings (with an accent, depending on the era) are finely stamped into the leather or engraved on the gold hardware; depending on the model, the interior carries a 'Made in Italy' label or stamp. The period typography must be consistent — our team cross-checks every piece against the house's historical references.

Saddlery, hardware and interior

Even, strong stitching, cleanly dyed edges, heavy hardware in a deep gold (horse-carriage or chain clasps depending on the model), consistent period interiors (leather or canvas). Lightweight hardware that flakes gives away a counterfeit.

Price and seller: the warning signs

A Macadam in good condition has real value: at a cut price, it should raise doubts. Insist on photos of the markings, the hardware and the edges.
