Recognising Genuine Valentino: An Authentication Guide
The pyramid-shaped Rockstud studs have travelled the world — and the counterfeiters have followed: Valentino Garavani sneakers, bags and accessories are copied on a massive scale. Here is how to check a piece before you buy.
At NB08, every piece is checked and authenticated in our boutique before it goes on sale. Here are the decisive markers.
Why check the authenticity of a Valentino piece?
The Rockstud signature is easy to evoke but very hard to execute to the Roman house's standard: the weight, finish and geometry of the studs separate the genuine from the fake.
The Rockstud studs

Authentic studs are made of heavy metal, with four even faces and a sharp point, firmly screwed or set at perfectly constant spacing. Copies use light, metallised plastic studs, poorly aligned, that move or flake. This is check number one.
Markings and labels
The 'VALENTINO GARAVANI' marking (insole, inner leather or plate) is finely stamped and aligned; the sneakers carry their size and reference inside, evenly stamped; the ready-to-wear carries woven labels with full codes. Crude stamping: a deal-breaker.
Leathers and construction
Supple, fine-grain leathers, clean edges, even stitching, well-bonded soles with no visible glue. The level of Italian execution is consistent on a genuine piece — the slightest approximation should set alarm bells ringing.
Price and seller: the warning signs
New Rockstuds discounted by two-thirds do not exist. Insist on macro photos of the studs and markings, plus the provenance.
