Recognising Genuine Tommy Hilfiger: An Authentication Guide
Tommy Hilfiger's red, white and blue flag has been copied since the 90s — and the vintage wave has amplified the phenomenon further. Here is how to check a Tommy piece, recent or vintage, before you buy.
At NB08, every piece is checked and authenticated in our boutique before it goes on sale. Here are the simple checks.
Why check the authenticity of a Tommy Hilfiger piece?
A global brand with a simple logo: copies abound among the basics (polo shirts, down jackets, sweatshirts), and '90s vintage' attracts fake pieces that have been artificially aged.
The embroidered flag

The small flag is precisely embroidered: well-defined rectangles, bold colours (red, white, navy), a crisp outline, dense embroidery stitched straight. Copies show misaligned colours, blurred edges or a flag set askew.
Labels and period consistency
A woven neck label with exact lettering (the labels vary from decade to decade — a 'vintage' piece must carry a label from its era), and a composition label with a style number. Spelling mistakes, cheap printing or anachronisms: rule it out.
Materials and finishing
Dense cottons and piqués, down jackets with an even filling, smooth zips, branded buttons, even seams. The finishing standard of a genuine piece stays consistent, even in the more affordable ranges.
Price and seller: the warning signs
Bundles of new pieces sold off cheap and generic photos: be wary. Ask for real photos of the flag and the labels.
