How to Care for and Wash a Moncler

A Moncler down jacket is an investment: well cared for, it keeps its loft, its warmth and its value for years. But down is a delicate material that calls for a few precautions. Here is how to wash, dry and care for your Moncler without damaging it.

Moncler down jacket being cared for: washing and drying the down

The golden rule: always read the label

First and foremost, check the care label sewn inside your piece. Depending on the model, the filling (down or synthetic) and the materials (nylon, wool, fur details), the instructions may vary. The advice below is general good practice, but the label always takes precedence.

Do you really need to wash your down jacket often?

No — and this is important: a down jacket should be washed only when necessary. Repeated washing wears out the down and the seams. For small, localised marks (collar, cuffs, a stain), there is no need to wash the whole thing — spot cleaning is usually enough.

Cleaning a localised stain

For a stain or soiled areas at the edges, use a damp flannel or cloth with a little mild soap (such as Marseille soap). Gently rub the affected surface without soaking the down inside, rinse by dabbing with a towel to avoid watermarks, then leave to dry on a hanger. This is the gentlest method for the piece.

Machine-washing your Moncler

If a full wash is needed and the label allows it, follow these steps:

  • Zip it up and turn it inside out before putting the down jacket in the machine.
  • Choose a cold delicate cycle (30°C maximum): heat damages the down.
  • Use a mild detergent, in a small amount.
  • No fabric softener: it makes the down clump and reduces the fabric's breathability.
  • Set a low spin so as not to crush the filling.

Hand washing — soaking in lukewarm water with a suitable product, then pressing without wringing — is an even gentler alternative for fragile pieces.

Drying: the most important step

Poor drying ruins a down jacket. The aim: to restore the loft and stop the down from clumping. There are two options:

  • In the tumble dryer (if the label allows it): a low-temperature programme, with 2 to 3 tennis balls or dryer balls to break up clumps of down. Take the piece out and shake it every 15-20 minutes.
  • In the open air: flat on a towel or on a wide hanger, in a well-ventilated place, patting it regularly to redistribute the down. It can sometimes take 2 to 3 days to dry completely.

In all cases, the down jacket must be completely dry before being put away: a piece stored damp loses its insulation and can develop odours.

What you should never do

A few mistakes to avoid at all costs: no hot water or high-temperature drying, no fabric softener, no drying on a radiator, with a hairdryer or in direct sunlight (risk of discolouration and damage to the down), and no direct ironing on the lacquered nylon.

Should you use a dry cleaner?

For a valuable piece like a Moncler, a specialist dry cleaner is often the safest choice — especially if in doubt, and for models with non-removable fur, leather details or a technical membrane. The cost (generally €25 to €40) remains modest compared with the value of the piece. Make sure to tell the dry cleaner that it is a down jacket, and check that overly harsh products will not be used.

Storing your Moncler properly

Out of season, store your down jacket in a dry, well-ventilated place, on a wide hanger, without compressing it in a vacuum bag (which eventually flattens the down). Good storage preserves the loft from one season to the next. The same principle applies to gilets and Moncler parkas.

Care that preserves value

Looking after your Moncler is not just a question of appearance: it is what maintains its value over time. A well-cared-for piece resells more easily and for more, one of the reasons why Moncler remains such a prized brand on the pre-owned market.
