Recognising Genuine Moncler: An Authentication Guide
Moncler is one of the most counterfeited brands in the world. With copies becoming ever more convincing, knowing how to authenticate a piece is essential — especially when buying pre-owned. This guide reviews every checkpoint, from the famous patch to the digital verification system, to help you recognise a genuine Moncler.
The principle: consistency above all
No single detail is enough on its own to guarantee authenticity. The best counterfeits reproduce one or two elements correctly but give themselves away as a whole. It is overall consistency — quality of materials, finishing, labels, hardware, verification code — that counts. Always examine several points, never just one.
1. The felt patch

The cockerel-and-mountains patch, usually on the left arm, is the first marker. On an authentic piece, it is made of high-quality felt with slightly fuzzy edges, never stiff or plasticky. The embroidery is fine, dense and even: the threads do not overlap, and the colours (blue and red) are vivid without being garish. Coarse embroidery, sharp plasticised edges or dull colours are warning signs.
2. The “Monduck” label
The care label illustrated with the little “Monduck” duck is a signature of the brand. On a genuine Moncler, it is printed on fine fabric (silk- or cotton-like), with slightly faded colours and rounded edges — never a shiny, garish heat transfer. The drawings are crisp and well positioned. Smudged printing or overly bright colours should raise suspicion.
3. The digital verification system
This is the most powerful checkpoint. Since 2008, Moncler has incorporated a security label with a unique code. On recent pieces, a label carries a QR code and an identification code to scan. Go to the official website code.moncler.com to check this code: it must match a product registered in the house's database. If the code is invalid, has already been used or redirects to another website, be extremely wary. On older pieces, a Certilogo system (12-digit code) may have been used. The holographic label, for its part, subtly changes colour depending on the angle. To understand the symbolism of the emblem, see also our guide to the Moncler logo and our breakdown of Moncler labels and codes.
4. The hardware: zips and buttons

Moncler uses only high-end fastenings (often Lampo, Vislon or YKK). The slider should run smoothly without catching and bear a crisp engraved inscription on the back. The press studs display “Moncler” in a circle, in precise lettering. Blurry, soft or shallow engravings, or light, cheap-feeling hardware, often give a copy away.
5. The quality of the down and fabric
A genuine Moncler can be recognised by touch. The high fill-power goose down regains its shape almost instantly after compression, while weighing very little. The lacquered nylon outer has a soft texture and a sophisticated sheen, never a cheap plastic look. The quilting seams are even and the inside finishing meticulous, with no loose threads.
6. Size and composition labels
The typography should be consistent and the translated information free of any spelling mistakes — a classic counterfeit giveaway. A useful detail: Moncler sizes are most often given as numbers (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) rather than letters. A label that is badly sewn, poorly translated or misspelt is a strong warning sign. Our Moncler size guide details the size conversions.
7. The signature pocket on the sleeve
On many iconic models such as the Maya and its derivatives, a patch pocket bearing the logo sits on the left sleeve. Its presence, position and finishing are further markers. To find out more about these pieces, read our article on the iconic Moncler models.
If in doubt
Some high-end counterfeits now imitate the patch and the hologram. If any doubt remains, the safest option is still to go through an official boutique, a trusted reseller or an independent authentication service. At NB08, every piece goes through our authentication process before it goes on sale.
