Recognising Genuine Arc'teryx: An Authentication Guide

Now the grail of techwear, Arc'teryx has become one of the most counterfeited outdoor brands: fake 'GORE-TEX' jackets are rife online. The good news: the technical standard of a genuine piece is extremely hard to imitate. Here is where to look.

At NB08, every piece is checked and authenticated in our boutique before it goes on sale. Here is the method.

Why check the authenticity of an Arc'teryx piece?

High prices, streetwear hype, global demand: the copies target the flagship models (Beta, Alpha, Atom). They imitate the look, never the construction.

The Archaeopteryx embroidery

The embroidered bird skeleton is remarkably fine: distinct bones, an even curve, dense embroidery with no pulled threads, even at a very small size. Copies produce a thickened bird with blurred details. It is the first check — in macro.

Heat-sealed seams and zips

Inside an authentic hardshell, the seam tapes are narrow and perfectly bonded, with no bubbles or lifting edges. The waterproof zips (often laminated) run firmly and smoothly, with neat zip garages. Wide, wrinkled tapes give a copy away immediately.

Labels, GORE-TEX and product consistency

The inside labels (model, size, country of manufacture) are precise, accompanied by the official GORE-TEX label where applicable. Check that the model name exists, that the colourway is official and that the fabric matches (a thin, limp 'Alpha SV' does not exist). The feel of the fabric — dense, dry, structured — is a reliable test.

Price and seller: the warning signs

A new Arc'teryx hardshell discounted by two-thirds is fake. Insist on photos of the embroidery, the inside tapes and the labels.

Checklist: authenticating an Arc'teryx piece in 7 points

  • Narrow, clean heat-sealed tapes
  • Firm, smooth-running waterproof zips
  • Precise model/size labels
  • Official GORE-TEX label (if applicable)

  • Realistic price and reliable seller
