Why check the authenticity of a Balenciaga piece?
Worldwide demand and the high prices of the Paris-run house make it a permanent target. Copies mainly go after logo pieces — precisely those where labelling details make the difference.
Inside labels: the heart of the check
On recent ready-to-wear, the black label carries fine, perfectly centred BALENCIAGA lettering; depending on the season, the size label shows the size crossed out with a characteristic line. The composition labels list full product codes (style, fabric, colour) — codes that can be cross-checked. Approximate typography, missing or inconsistent codes: rule it out.
Screen prints and embroidery
Printed logos are surgically precise: dense ink, crisp outlines, millimetre-perfect positioning. Embroidery (on caps in particular) is tight and even. A slightly tilted logo or thin ink that lets the fabric show through: a bad sign.
Materials, sneakers and finishing
Heavy, soft fleeces, dense cottons. On sneakers (Triple S, Track, Speed), check the moulded markings on the sole, the size marked on the heel and the quality of the multi-layer construction — copies always cut corners somewhere. The overall finishing (seams, eyelets, laces) is flawless on a genuine piece.
Price and seller: the warning signs
Balenciaga holds its value well on iconic pieces: a slashed price almost always hides a copy. Ask for photos of the product codes.
