Recognising Genuine Off-White: An Authentication Guide

For years, Off-White has been among the most counterfeited brands in the world: the diagonal arrows, quotation marks and yellow zip tie have been copied endlessly. Here is how to recognise a genuine piece from Virgil Abloh's legacy.

At NB08, every piece is checked and authenticated in our boutique before it goes on sale. The decisive points are set out below.

Why check the authenticity of an Off-White piece?

The brand has been copied so much that fake pieces far outnumber genuine ones in circulation on some platforms. Fortunately, authentic production (Made in Italy or Portugal) has standards that copies do not reach.

Screen prints: arrows, quotation marks and lettering

The crossed diagonal arrows are printed with dense ink and perfectly straight edges; the Helvetica lettering is even, with the correct typographic quotation marks. On copies: thin ink, bleeding edges, slightly wrong letter spacing — always compare with official photos of the same model.

Labels, codes and zip tie

The woven 'OFF-WHITE c/o VIRGIL ABLOH™' neck label is crisp, and the inside labels carry product and season codes that can be cross-checked. The famous yellow zip tie is only an accessory: its presence proves nothing (counterfeiters sell it separately), and neither does its absence — never judge a piece by its zip tie.

Materials and finishing

Thick cottons, dense fleeces, even seams, sturdy collars. The signature details (woven outer label, 'MAIN LABEL' markings depending on the season) are cleanly executed. A piece that feels light and rough to the touch is not Off-White.

Price and seller: the warning signs

Pieces from the Abloh era are gaining value: a spectacular 'bargain' is a trap 9 times out of 10. Insist on product codes and macro photos of the prints.

Checklist: authenticating an Off-White piece in 7 points

  • Dense arrows with straight edges
  • Even Helvetica typography, correct quotation marks
  • Clean woven neck label
  • Consistent product/season codes
  • Thick cotton, even seams
  • Never judge on the zip tie alone
  • Realistic price and clear provenance
