Recognising Genuine Gucci: An Authentication Guide

Along with Louis Vuitton, Gucci is one of the most counterfeited houses on the planet. Bags, belts, ready-to-wear: everything is copied, at every level of quality. Here are the checks that let you tell a genuine Gucci piece from an imitation.

At NB08, every piece is checked and authenticated in our boutique before it goes on sale. The method is set out below.

Why check the authenticity of a Gucci piece?

The GG monogram and the green-red-green stripe are recognisable worldwide — and therefore copied on an industrial scale. Fake belts and fake bags dominate the grey market: a methodical check is always a must.

The monogram and hardware

The two interlocking Gs have precise proportions: on buckles and clasps, the metal is heavy, with smooth finishes and no casting burrs. The GG Supreme canvas shows a perfectly regular, aligned pattern. Lightweight metal, Gs that are too thick or badly spaced: a copy.

Serial numbers and labels

On leather goods, the inside leather tag reads 'GUCCI made in italy' with, on the back, the serial number on two lines of finely and evenly stamped digits. On ready-to-wear: crisp woven labels and complete product codes. Crude stamping, digits spaced too far apart or a serial number in an aberrant format: a deal-breaker.

Leathers, stitching and finishing

Gucci leathers are supple with an even grain; the stitching runs perfectly parallel to the edges; the linings are taut. A 'plastic' smell, wandering stitching and hastily painted edges are the hallmarks of counterfeits.

Price and seller: the warning signs

A new GG belt at €60 does not exist. Insist on a macro photo of the serial number and clear provenance (invoice, history).

Checklist: authenticating a Gucci piece in 7 points

  • Heavy hardware with no burrs
  • Regular, aligned GG pattern
  • Finely stamped serial number (leather goods)
  • Woven labels + product codes (ready-to-wear)
  • Supple leather, parallel stitching
  • Realistic price and clear provenance
