Recognising Genuine Louis Vuitton: An Authentication Guide
Louis Vuitton is, by a long way, the most counterfeited brand in the world. From €30 copies to 'superfakes' that are almost undetectable to an untrained eye, the pre-owned market demands a real method. Here are the checks our team applies to every LV bag and accessory.
At NB08, every Louis Vuitton piece is checked and authenticated in our boutique before it goes on sale. These pointers will help you buy anywhere with full knowledge of the facts.
Why check the authenticity of a Louis Vuitton piece?
The resale value of LV bags (Speedy, Neverfull, Pochette…) attracts an entire counterfeiting industry. The good news: the house's manufacturing follows very strict rules, which provides reliable checkpoints.
The canvas and pattern symmetry

Monogram or Damier canvas is coated, with a light grain, neither shiny nor stiff like plastic. The patterns are aligned and symmetrical in relation to the seams; on a Speedy, the monogram is upright on one side and upside down on the other (the bag is made from a single piece of folded canvas). A pattern cut any old way is an immediate deal-breaker.
Stitching, leather and patina
The stitching is perfectly even, slightly slanted, in mustard-yellow thread on the iconic models, with a constant stitch count on reference areas (for example the Speedy's tab). Natural vachetta leather is pale when new, then develops a golden honey patina over time — 'leather' that stays plastic-white or turns grey is suspect.
Markings, date codes and chip
The 'LOUIS VUITTON PARIS made in France' stamp (or Spain, USA…) is finely heat-stamped: thin letters, perfectly round Os, crisp serifs. Until 2021, pieces carry a date code (workshop letters + digits) whose format must be consistent with the period; since 2021, it has been replaced by an invisible NFC chip. A date code in an impossible format or a crude font condemns the piece.
Price and seller: the warning signs
A genuine LV is never sold off cheap. Insist on sharp photos of the stitching, the stamp and the date code, and be wary of 'too perfect' dust bags and invoices supplied in bulk by counterfeiters.
