Recognising Genuine Autry: An Authentication Guide

Autry's comeback and the success of the Medalist have brought their share of counterfeits, particularly on resale platforms. A fake Autry is nevertheless fairly quick to spot once you know where to look: leather, flag logo, markings and box. We show you how.

At NB08, every pair is checked and authenticated in our boutique before it goes on sale. Here are the checks you need to know.

Why check the authenticity of a pair of Autry sneakers?

The Medalist plays in the same league as premium Italian sneakers: high prices, strong demand, recognisable production. Copies imitate the vintage silhouette but fall short on leather quality and precision of detail.

Leather and construction

A genuine Autry uses thick, slightly textured leather, with well-cut panels stitched straight. The deliberately 'vintage' look remains clean: no visible glue, no frayed edges. Copies use thin, plasticky leathers that crease badly and crack when flexed.

The flag, labels and markings

The American flag on the side and the 'AUTRY' label are crisp: precise printing, bold colours, identical positioning from one pair to the next. The inside label (on the tongue) shows size, reference and manufacturing details in clean typography — it must match the box exactly. The sole marking and the heel plate are neat and even.

The box and accessories

The Autry box, its reference, the size and the colourway must all match the pair. Tissue paper and packaging are understated and of good quality. A missing box does not rule out a pre-owned pair, but an inconsistent box rules out a 'new' one.

Price and seller: the warning signs

A new Medalist at less than half the retail price is suspect. Insist on photos of the inside label and the sole.

Checklist: authenticating a pair of Autry sneakers in 7 points

  • Thick, textured leather, clean cuts
  • Straight stitching, no visible glue
  • Precise flag and AUTRY lettering
  • Inside label consistent with the box
  • Even sole and heel markings
  • Consistent box and accessories
  • Realistic price and reliable seller
