Recognising Genuine Prada: An Authentication Guide

Prada is one of the most counterfeited houses in the world: bags, nylon, leather goods and ready-to-wear are all copied, sometimes very convincingly. When buying pre-owned, a methodical check is essential. Here is the method we apply at NB08, summarised for you.

Every Prada piece we sell is checked and authenticated in our boutique before it goes on sale. But these reflexes will serve you wherever you shop.

Why check the authenticity of a Prada piece?

The Prada triangle is one of the most reproduced logos in luxury. 'Superfakes' imitate the overall look well — it is in the manufacturing details that the difference shows: logo plaque, markings, lining and material.

The triangle and logo markings

Authenticated Prada piece, enamelled triangle plaque

On the enamelled triangle plaque, the 'PRADA / MILANO / DAL 1913' lettering is finely engraved, with the coat of arms centred and the edges of the plaque even. The 'R' in PRADA has its small characteristic notch in the leg. Thick or off-centre lettering, or a plaque with crude corners, signals a copy.

Labels, linings and numbers

On ready-to-wear, the white inside label carries perfectly even typography, accompanied by detailed composition labels and an article code. Logo linings (jacquard) show a crisp, symmetrical pattern. On leather goods, look for the inside marking and consistent factory numbers. The white 'certificate' quality label that accompanies new pieces must be consistent with the item.

Materials and hardware

Prada Re-Nylon/nylon is dense, matt and tightly woven — very different from the shiny nylons of copies. Saffiano leathers have an even, deep grain. Zips and snap hooks are heavy, cleanly engraved and run smoothly. The stitching is of perfect industrial regularity.

Price and seller: the warning signs

Prada holds its value well on sought-after pieces. A slashed price, generic photos, no invoice or dust bag for a 'new' piece: these are all red flags.

Checklist: authenticating a Prada piece in 7 points

  • Finely engraved triangle plaque, centred coat of arms
  • 'R' with the characteristic notch
  • Consistent inside labels + article code
  • Crisp, symmetrical jacquard lining
  • Dense, matt nylon / evenly grained Saffiano
  • Heavy, engraved, smooth-running hardware
  • Plausible price, invoice or clear provenance
