Recognising Genuine Asics: An Authentication Guide
Carried by the retro-running wave, the Asics Gel-NYC and Gel-1130 have become hype sneakers — with the counterfeits that come with them. Here are the simple checks that tell a genuine pair from a copy.
At NB08, every pair is checked and authenticated in our boutique before it goes on sale. The key points are set out below.
Why check the authenticity of a pair of Asics sneakers?
Popular colourways (Cream Fossil, Cloud Grey…) sell out fast and resell at a profit: fake pairs target exactly these references, almost always sold as 'new'.
The Asics stripes and the construction of the upper

The crossed Asics stripes are precisely stitched and symmetrical between the two feet. The upper layers mesh and suede/synthetic in clean tiers; on a copy, the layers are poorly cut, the topstitching irregular and the mesh coarse.
The GEL and the sole
On models with visible GEL, the insert is properly set, translucent, with no bubbles or rough edges. The midsole is firm and the markings (ASICS, technologies) are finely moulded. Spongy cushioning and smudged markings give away a counterfeit.
Inside label and box
The label under the tongue lists the product reference, colourway, multi-standard sizes and manufacturing details, all cleanly printed — compare it with the box label: everything must match. Also check that the colourway name officially exists for the model.
Price and seller: the warning signs
A rock-bottom price on a sought-after reference, stock photos, a refusal to send the inside label: walk away.
