Recognising Genuine New Balance: An Authentication Guide
2002R, 1906R, 990… New Balance's lifestyle silhouettes have become global best-sellers, and counterfeits have followed. Some copies are crude, others call for a trained eye. Here are the points that let you settle the question quickly.

Why check the authenticity of a pair of New Balance sneakers?
Sought-after colourways (2002R Protection Pack, 1906R…) resell well above retail price: a perfect market for fake pairs, often sold as 'new with box'.
The N logo and quality of materials
The 'N' on the side is perfectly cut and stitched (or welded, depending on the model) and symmetrical between the two shoes. The suede on a genuine pair is dense and soft, the mesh even, the overlays aligned. Rough, thin suede, a crooked N or slightly wrong logo proportions: it's a copy.
The inside label and the box
On the inside of the tongue, the label shows the full reference (e.g. M2002R…), the US/UK/EU/cm size and the country of manufacture, with crisp printing. This information must be identical to that on the box label. Any discrepancy (reference, colourway, size) is a deal-breaker, as is a blurry print font.
Sole, cushioning and finishing
N-ergy / ABZORB soles are firm and structured, the moulded markings are crisp and the glue does not overflow. Copies often have soft cushioning, soles that yellow oddly straight out of the box and excess glue along the welt.
Price and seller: the warning signs
A sought-after 2002R at half price 'new' does not exist. Ask for photos of the inside label and the box side by side.
