Recognising Genuine Birkenstock: An Authentication Guide
Arizona, Boston, Madrid: Birkenstock's cult models are copied in huge volumes, from markets to online platforms. Yet a genuine pair can be recognised by simple details. Here they are.
At NB08, every pair is checked and authenticated in our boutique before it goes on sale. The checks are set out below.
Why check the authenticity of a pair of Birkenstocks?
The German sandal is a global best-seller: copies flood the market, with materials that lack the anatomical comfort that defines the brand.
The anatomical footbed and markings

The cork footbed (or the one-piece EVA sole) follows a precise anatomy: a pronounced arch, a raised edge, toe grips. The BIRKENSTOCK markings on the sole and the imprint on the footbed (logo, EU/UK size, made in Germany) are crisply moulded or printed. A flat footbed and blurred markings: a copy.
Buckles, straps and materials
The metal buckles are sturdy, with firm prongs, and the straps (leather, Birko-Flor or EVA) are cleanly cut with neat edges. On EVA models, the material is supple, light and matt — no shiny plastic that cracks.
Model and size consistency
Check that the model, colourway and width (regular/narrow, marked on the sole) officially exist, and that the marked size matches the actual size. Copies often mix up the markings.
Price and seller: the warning signs
Cut-price 'Birkenstock bundles' on social media are the classic channel for fake pairs. Ask for photos of the sole and markings.
