Recognising Genuine Jacquemus: An Authentication Guide

The meteoric success of Jacquemus — from the Chiquito to the Artichaut bucket hat — has made it a prime target for counterfeiters. Bucket hats, bags and knitwear circulate in large numbers on the pre-owned market, and not every piece is authentic. This guide gives you the reflexes for checking a Jacquemus piece before you buy.

At NB08, every piece is checked and authenticated in the boutique before it goes on sale. But knowing how to check for yourself remains the best protection. Here are the essential points to examine.

Why check the authenticity of a Jacquemus piece?

Simon Porte Jacquemus's brand is young, highly publicised and driven by accessible pieces such as the bucket hat — exactly the profile that copies target. Counterfeits imitate the general silhouette but almost always fail on the lettering, the labels and the consistency of the finishing.

The 'JACQUEMUS' lettering and embroidery

The JACQUEMUS lettering is the first thing to check: even spacing, fine and crisp letters, dense embroidery with no protruding threads. On bucket hats, the embroidery is well centred and the thread tension is constant. Thick or slanted lettering, or irregular spacing, is an immediate warning sign.

Inside labels and composition

Turn the piece inside out: the main label carries clean lettering, and the composition label specifies the materials and the country of manufacture (often Portugal, Italy or Bulgaria depending on the line), with consistent product codes. Spelling mistakes, crookedly printed labels or fanciful materials ('100% cotton' on a piece supposed to be linen) give away a copy.

Materials, cut and finishing

Jacquemus takes great care over its materials: dense cotton canvases, linen that feels dry to the touch, even knits. The seams are straight and tight, and the eyelets and drawcords are well finished. A thin, limp fabric, loose seams or an approximate cut do not match the brand's standards. For size conversions and bucket hat sizing, see our Jacquemus size guide.

Price and seller: the warning signs

A new Jacquemus bucket hat or bag at a fraction of the boutique price should raise doubts. Be wary of stolen photos, sellers with no track record and refusals to send detailed photos of the labels. Our guide to pre-owned Jacquemus details the buying method.

Checklist: authenticating a Jacquemus piece in 7 points

  • Crisp, evenly spaced JACQUEMUS lettering
  • Dense, centred embroidery with no loose threads
  • Consistent composition label (material + country)
  • Product codes present and clean
  • Quality material (dense cotton, linen, even knit)
  • Straight seams and careful finishing
  • Price in line with the market and a reliable seller
